First things first, since it’s become official on social media, I should share it here too – I’m kind of head over heels for a certain fella. The best thing? He feels the same way about me!
More firsts – going to Shawano this weekend. Visiting the farmhouse he’s restoring (swoon). Meeting his parents (they’re just as fantastic as he is).
There’s a whole host of barns and outbuildings on his property loaded with all sorts of vintage farm equipment and furniture and amazing relics from the past like that veterinary medication up top. It was a sight to behold.
I also spent $60 on olive oil and balsamic vinegar and it was so worth it.
The Red River is gorgeous and powerful and seeing it in this limbo between winter and spring where the water was rushing but the rocks were snow covered was beautiful and magical and I’m so glad he took me.
I’ve joined an indoor soccer league that my little sister’s boyfriend plays on. I started playing soccer when I was 5 and continued through college but haven’t kicked a ball in at least two years. I’ll be playing my first game Monday and I’m terrified but excited to shake off the rust (and hopefully not break anything in the process).
Finally going to see Black Panther this weekend and I. Cannot. Wait. Even though, technically, I guess I have been waiting for weeks. It’ll be worth it though. Seeing as how waiting 20+ years to watch Jurassic Park turned out to be well worth it.
What is a “classic” movie that you haven’t seen but is on your list? Other ones of mine are Fight Club and Meet Me In St. Louis.
What is kindness to you? For me it’s “please” and “thank you” and offering a cup of coffee and being open and honest. And so much more. Kindness is a lot like loving, isn’t it?
The new reboot of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is giving me all the feels. It’s funny and full of heart.
I’m nearly at the end of Gilmore Guys so I’m beginning the hunt for a new podcast. So far Pop Rocket and Dear Hank and John are the front runners.
My friend Danielle will be here next week and we are going to the Lorde concert in MKE and that may be the best impulse decision I’ve made in awhile.
Tbh, I didn’t even know Lorde was the headliner. I initially was just wanting to see Run The Jewels. Lorde was really just a bonus.
We are also doing the Pabst brewery tour because her favorite beer is PBR and my friends are just the classiest.
Tuesday night I went to a dinner party and had the best time! It was a make-your-own Bahn Mi situation and I was in heaven. There were also cilantro mint mojitos and rice noodle and shrimp spring rolls. Again – heaven.
It was also my first encounter with Curtido – a South American style fermented cabbage that’s a lot like kimchi. But full of coriander and oregano. It was so good I could sing. And no one wants that.
Buuuuuuut, speaking of singing – I revisited Drinking From A Salt Pond this week by RRN. Alex has a killer voice. And is a gifted lyricist. Give ’em a listen!
I’m officially in SC! Two day’s worth of driving and singing and sometimes swearing and I made it in early yesterday afternoon. Standing never felt so good.
Do you like driving? Do you like solo road trips? Honestly – I love both! Originally, this wasn’t the plan, but I’m happy as can be with how it turned out and what it turned into. I firmly believe you learn a lot about yourself whilst on the open road.
But, because I’m me and I need sleep there was no way I was making the 16-hour drive in one shot. I spent the night in Louisville at the sweetest AirBnb. I’d never explored around the area much, though I’ve driven through plenty of times. I got dinner and drinks at Crescent Hill Craft House and the next morning ate the most ridiculously buttery, flavorful, enticing scone at Blue Dog Bakery. Apple cardamom with a brown sugar glaze. It tasted like a fancy poptart! The best part? Everything was just a quick walk from where I stayed.
Even though it was slightly difficult to walk because while I was packing up my car I slid on ice and sufficiently jammed the toes of my left foot. They’re swollen and sore and bruised, but getting better every day so at least they’re not broken? Silverlinings, y’all.
The amount of brain space used holding onto old lyrics from albums I haven’t listened to in decades in astonished. Imagine the real estate I’d have available if I didn’t remember every word to Hilary Duff’s “Metamorphosis” – I could rule the world! Or at least be better at mental math.
Before leaving I gave myself a manicure and it just so happens to match my new phone case – a fact which every girlfriend I’ve seen has pointed out to me. I dunno why that makes me so happy – but it does. These are my people.
I’m writing this from the corner table of GB&D, trying (and failing) not to cry. I’m so happy to be here again – to squeeze my friends and be in this space, to hear the noises of the kitchen, the ice clinking into glasses. I’m truly overwhelmed in a way I didn’t expect.
I cut bangs just a few weeks before Christmas. I did this last year too. And apparently will never learn. I always like them for a few weeks, and then the upkeep gets to be too much and I realize I’ll never be as cute at Zooey Deschanel.
I roasted my first pork belly today! Can’t wait to share it!
I bet Ron Swanson would be proud of the pork. I feel a deeper connection to him after my friend, Tim, and I had Ron Swansnight last weekend. We made steak, bacon, and ribs and watched our favorite Swanson-centric episodes of Parks & Rec. Bully for us!
I’ve got a friend from Chicago coming up in two weeks, then one from SC, then I’m headed *back* to SC. January is going to be gone in a blink!
Do you enjoy listening to podcasts? What’re you listening to? As always, I’m plugging away at Gilmore Guys. But now! I’ve started *watching* the podcasts. They have taped live shows and I am just so enamored with them.
Before the New Year began I started going through my things, as a sort of end-of-the-year-load lightening and boy does it feel good! Plus, I’m finally getting around the decorating my room in my mom’s house to be “me” instead of “spare room” so it’s been good to take stock of what I have and want and what makes me happy.
That picture up top? Taken by my friend Tom! He’s a budding photog and is doing a photo-a-day challenge for 2018. We met for coffee the other day and he told me all about it and I admired his camera bag. You can follow along here!
I’m so ready to be home. To the point where I’m getting lax around here. I’m not proud of it. But it’s happening. Please forgive me.
That doesn’t mean I’ve stopped baking though! I’ve been busy perfecting my chocolate cake recipe – making it once for a coworker and again for a regular customer who also had birthdays. Just trying to make December birthdays a little better, you know?
In addition to not writing as much right now, I also haven’t packed yet.
Or finished wrapping presents. Why do I do this to myself.
Remember the Christmas party I talked about last week? My Secret Santa got me the absolute perfect gift! Succulents! I’m trying to get a greener thumb now that I’m a ~homeowner~ but haven’t been having the best lucky. She, on the other hand, is super skilled, to the point of being able to grow her only succulents from little leaf pieces of other succulents. She’s also a very talented artist and painted the little pots in the most adorable patterns. Ugh. Some people really get with both hands, don’t they.
I sorted Leonard into his Hogwarts House. He’s a Hufflepuff! Just like me! I had no doubt. What House are you in?!
We’re doing a Christmas Eve brunch at my sister’s on Saturday. I’m so excited! I’ll be making my family biscuits and gravy and grits for the first time. They have no idea what’s about to hit them. There will also be eggnog waffles and maple whiskey bacon.
I also fully intend to partake in at least one supper club and one fish fry whilst home.
Monday was our work Christmas party and it was such a blast! A friend and I made Christmas skirts – mine out of a vintage tablecloth, hers out of tree skirt. I don’t wanna toot my own horn, but we looked pretty adorable.
At said party I also wore jellies. Yes, jellies! I didn’t have any gold or nude flats and I did a quick Amazon search and found some. They’re cute, comfy, and super affordable! Plus, they’re jellies. I got a lot of compliments on them.
Anyone else a sucker for movies on TV that you already own? Like, I enjoy the movie so much I own it on DVD but if E! is playing it, I’ll put it on to watch, commercials and all. I may or may not be doing that with When Harry Met Sally. I adore that movie.
All those couples sharing their love stories? Ugh. Too cute.
Guys! I just typed that sentence above and my computer is telling me I used to the wrong their. That it should have been “there” love stories. Ha! There’s proof that technology isn’t always correct! Success!
I’ve been crushing on Bruno Mars for a few weeks now. This is only worsening that crush. He’s coming to Charlotte in September and I may have to splurge and get tickets.
Do you think if you have a dream about a bakery that you should go there? I think it does.
I’m a sucker for audio books – particularly biographies or memoirs from comedians. Nick Offerman, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling, Jenny Mollen. All keep me entertained and laughing. But they also are super inspiring and have nuggets of wisdom that are relatable and helpful. These 9 Best One Liners from Why Not Me reminded me of that.
